Sulphite
Sulphite is not usually found in natural waters because it oxidises readily to Sulphate. It is this property which makes it a useful additive to boiler water as an Oxygen scavenger. Sodium Sulphite is a useful dechlorinating agent in swimming pools. Solutions of Sulphur Dioxide are used in certain bleaching processes and in preserving foodstuffs and their concentration may be determined using the sulphite test.
