Nitrite
Nitrite is added to water in cooling towers at high concentrations to act as a corrosion inhibitor. It is found in uncooked pickled meats and in pickling brines where its concentration is strictly controlled under a statutory instrument. Nitrite is rarely found in quantity in untreated waters and the current EC limit is 0.1 mg/l. In aquaria, Nitrites are toxic to acquatic life at levels above 0.2 mg/l.
